Line Array No 4, 2025. Western Cedar shims, steel, and hardware. 84 x 84 x 1.5 in (213.36 x 213.36 x 3.81 cm)
Line Array is a series of work reflective of a material sensitivity through repetitive direct handling processes and pattern exploration. Each piece is comprised of over 1,350 cedar shims, tapered wood pieces commonly used as building supply, individually arranged within a framed space to create dynamic contours and patterns that emulate organic geometry. Various approaches to the color palette were explored with each piece ranging from monochromatic or tonal ranges using painted acrylic, to darker values with an oxidation solution to emphasize the negative space between each shim. During the construction process, akin to tile/mosaic and stone wall building, the shims were individually selected and placed, repositioned along the way, to work through multiple configurations as seen in the radial and interlocking shapes. Once the final compositions were determined, the shims were permanently secured in place.
