Tabby Texture Black No 1, 2022, Woven wool and cotton fabric on stretched canvas. 40 × 20 × 1.5 in (101.6 x 50.8 x 3.81 cm)

Tabby Texture weavings are part of a series exploring texture and pattern as forms of visual weight using a TC2 (Thread Controller 2) digital jacquard weaving loom. Originating from watercolor compositions, areas of bold color are replaced with various tabby, or “plain weave” structures, a fundamental weaving pattern, and woven using black wool and or white cotton yarns on a cotton warp. The interaction between an achromatic palette, the woven surfaces, and light, reveals the subtle and dramatic changes in textural relief.
